That Time I Turned My Backyard into a BabyBus Party

“(And Lived to Tell the Tale)”

Okay, moms. Can we talk about the wild world of birthday parties for a sec? When my little one turned two, he was in full BabyBus obsession mode. Like, we couldn’t go five minutes without hearing the Baby Shark cleaning song or Kiki telling us to brush our teeth. And if you know, you know—it’s catchy, it’s cute, and it kind of grows on you like that one houseplant you never water but somehow keeps thriving. So naturally, when I asked him what kind of party he wanted, he screamed “BAY-BEE-BUUUUS!” and did a spin that nearly knocked over my coffee.

The theme was set, and so began my journey into planning a BabyBus Backyard Bash—armed with glitter, snacks, and a dream (plus a glue gun that I still haven’t figured out how to turn off properly). Let me take you through the chaos, the cupcakes, the coloring pages, and how I pulled off a budget-friendly BabyBus party that was cute enough to make Pinterest blush and chill enough that I didn’t lose my mind. Come along, fellow mamas—this one’s for you.

Why a BabyBus Party is Pure Genius

Here’s the thing, my living room is NOT party-proof. Last time I let a group of toddlers play inside, someone climbed the bookshelf like a tree, and another kid mistook a throw pillow for a cake. So this year, we moved it outside. And let me tell you—best. decision. ever. The backyard became our magical BabyBus world. I mean, who needs a venue when you’ve got grass, sunshine, and unlimited room for zoomies? The kids had space to run, tumble, and pretend they were driving Kiki’s bus all over the lawn.

I didn’t have to worry about juice spills on the couch or stepping on a rogue balloon animal in the middle of the night. One kid actually spent 15 minutes trying to “honk” a bush because he thought it was part of the BabyBus. It was chaos. Beautiful, sunshiney chaos. And speaking of making magic without spending a small fortune…

FREE BabyBus Playground Birthday Invitations

Now listen, I love a cute party invitation as much as the next mom. There’s just something about seeing your little one’s name in fancy fonts with glittery graphics that makes your heart do a happy dance. But when I started browsing for custom BabyBus invitations online and saw the price tags? Whew. I almost needed a paper bag to breathe into—$75 for ten cards? For something that’s probably going to end up under a couch cushion or covered in juice stains?

That’s when I had a full-on “Nope, not today” moment and went the DIY route. I rolled up my sleeves, made myself a snack (because crafting is hungry work), and opened up good ol’ Canva. And you know what? It turned out adorable. I whipped up these bright, cheerful BabyBus invitations with Kiki, Miumiu, and all the toddler-approved colors. And the best part? They were totally free. My favorite price in the entire universe—right up there with “kids eat free” and “surprise Target gift card.”

I even added a picture of that cheeky little mouse from the show (you know, the one who always looks like he’s up to something?) and some big bold lettering so even Grandma could read it without her glasses. You can print them out or just text them, because—let’s be real—not everyone checks their mailbox anymore.

There’s also a matching welcome sign and thank-you card in the same theme, and I’m not saying I printed them all… but I totally printed them all. One guest mom actually asked me, “Where did you get these done?” And I told her, “My couch. At 10 p.m. With a cookie in one hand and a toddler on my lap.” Efficiency, thy name is motherhood.

  5. Once you finished with the editing, you can download the final draft (Go to File > Download > Select the File Type (PNG is the best option) > Download.

B. How to Print the file?

“Steps for printing our templates”

  1. Save the image you want to print to the computer or to a flash drive if it is not saved already. (Step 5 of Download Instruction).
  2. Go to the file explorer and find the file. Double click the image.
  3. The file will open in Windows Photo Viewer
  4. Go to print at the top and then go to the print option
  5. Select the color printer if you want the photo to print in color
  6. Select the print size you want
  7. You may want to play around with the “Fit picture to frame” option. Sometimes that option will allow the photo to print closer to the border, but sometimes it will cut off the edges of the photo.
  8. Hit print and Voila!!!

Speaking of birthday parties, we avoid to see anything basic, especially when it comes to children’s birthdays. By unusual, I mean something that isn’t typical Floral theme, but rather something like what’s in this page or something like these,  BabyBus Kids and BabyBus Wonderland birthday invitation templates.

Let’s Do Decor Without Drama

“(And Definitely Without Draining My Wallet)”

Okay, so I might not have a party planning business (yet—never say never), but hand me a pack of primary-colored balloons and a roll of tape, and suddenly I’m a one-woman party tornado. Like, Martha Stewart wishes she had this kind of chaotic energy. For our BabyBus birthday bash, I leaned into those bright, cheerful vibes—think bold reds, blues, greens, and sunshine yellows. Basically, if it looked like something Baby Kiki would wear or ride in, it made the cut.

I covered our little picnic setup in color-coordinated tablecloths, strung balloons along the fence like my life depended on it, and even printed out some super cute BabyBus character cutouts at home. I taped them onto sticks and stuck them in everything—cupcake trays, the fruit bowl, the dirt (a.k.a. our pretend garden). Miumiu even peeked out from the cooler like she was supervising the juice boxes.

I even made “Kiki Cups” by sticking googly eyes on yellow paper cups and drawing little panda ears on them. Were they perfect? Nope. But the kids were OBSESSED. One of them asked if he could take his home and sleep with it. I said yes. That cup is probably still in circulation somewhere.

And the backdrop? Oh girl. I printed a BabyBus-themed sign, taped it to the fence, and fluffed some Dollar Store pom-poms around it like I knew what I was doing. The whole thing looked like I paid a party pro, but really, it cost less than a takeout meal. Mom win. Now let’s move on to what really matters at a kids’ party…

That Cake? Yeah, I Slayed It (With a Toothpick Topper)

I knew I wasn’t going to whip up a fondant masterpiece shaped like Miumiu (unless someone wanted to eat a vaguely pink blob), so I kept it simple. Grocery store sheet cake? Yes, please. I printed out a BabyBus image, taped it to a skewer, and boom—instant cake topper. I tossed on some sprinkles in party colors and called it a day. My son gasped like it was the greatest thing he’d ever seen. And honestly? It kind of was.

One little girl came up to the table, eyes wide and full of wonder, and asked in the sweetest voice, “Can the cake sing like Kiki?” I didn’t even hesitate—I told her, “Only if you eat it really fast.” Her eyes lit up like she’d just received a secret mission, and two minutes later, she was double-fisting cake with frosting on her nose like a total pro. Honestly? Iconic behavior.

The Party Games? Give Them Crayons and Pray

Here’s a pro tip that I now swear by, have a coloring table. I set up a tiny table with printed BabyBus coloring sheets, a bucket of crayons, and some sticker sheets for extra fun. It was like magic. Kids wandered over between games and snacks and just chilled. And while they scribbled happily, I had five whole minutes to eat a cupcake, wipe frosting off my jeans, and take a blurry selfie with the birthday boy.

One of the quieter kiddos—sweet as can be—wandered over to the coloring station while the rest of the party crew was busy chasing bubbles and pretending to drive the BabyBus. She sat down, completely in her own little world, and spent almost the entire party carefully coloring a rainbow Miumiu masterpiece. I mean, every stripe was perfectly in place. Total concentration. Tongue poking out the side of her mouth. It was adorable.

Later, her mom came up to me and said, “She loved that so much, we framed it and hung it up in her room.” Cue me trying very hard not to cry in front of the bounce house. That’s when it hit me—sometimes it’s not the flashy stuff that leaves the biggest impression. It’s the quiet moments, the cozy corners, and the simple joys.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the party wasn’t about perfect decorations or a cake that could survive a close-up on Pinterest. It wasn’t about matching napkins or themed party favors tied with twine (though I did try to tie a few before realizing I had frosting on my hands). It was about laughter—big belly giggles from toddlers high on juice boxes. It was about sticky fingers, frosting smudges, and hugs from kids who had crumbs in their hair.

It was about watching my little guy dance his heart out to the BabyBus theme song like it was his personal concert—even though literally every single person at the party was watching. And cheering. And probably filming him for future wedding material. That moment? That goofy little dance with his arms flailing and one sock missing? That’s the memory I’m keeping forever.

So if you’re planning a BabyBus birthday bash for your tiny super fan, take a deep breath. You don’t have to go over-the-top to make it magical. Honestly, you just need a backyard or a park, some crayons and printable coloring pages, a cake with wonky googly eyes, and a whole lot of love. Kids don’t care if the balloons are helium or if your cupcakes look like they were frosted by a unicorn or a raccoon (mine were… somewhere in between).
